Samuel E Bamber, secretary and manager of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., one of best-known jewelry men in St. Louis and through the west, through which he traveled extensively, disappeared mysteriously Thursday morning, Oct. 27. After six days of anxious searching he was found Wednesday afternoon, Nov 3, wandering along a road near Normandy, a St. Louis suburb. His mind was a blank and on being taken to his home he did not recognize it or his wife and children. After a night’s sleep he recognized his family, but could not tell where he had been since his disappearance. His clothing and shoes indicated that he had walked much and fared badly. Mr. Bamber had for time been suffering from nervous strain. He was subject to periods of depression and abstraction and at times passed acquaintances without recognizing them. Thursday morning he left the store without saying where he going. He did not go home, and when inquiry was made later in the day no trace of him could be found.

Filing of the last will and testament of the late George J. Hess, founder of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., reveals the fact that he created a trust estate for the benefit of his widow, Mrs. Maud L. Hess. Under its provisions she is to receive an income of $500 per month and any excess income from his estate is to be equally divided between his two daughters, Mrs. Virginia B. Baird of Shreveport, La., and Mrs. Mildred A. Dunbar of St. Louis. In addition to creating this trust fund, the deceased made a number of specific bequests in his will, among them being gifts of $200 each to all employes who have been in his service for more than 15 years. Another personal bequest was of $1,000 to Walter Infield, an employe, provided he was still working for the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co. Larger bequests of $5,000 each were made to Mrs. Mattie B. Hart, a sister; Mrs. Betty Haxenstadt, a sister-in-law, and to his son Burchard O. Hess of Chicago. One provision in his will is a request that his holdings in the company be held indefinitely unless some unforeseen circumstance should arise to make it advisable that they be sold. No public statement of the value of the estate was made. Lee J. Vogt, re-elected to succeed him as president of the company, and James V. Dunbar, a son-in-law, were named as executors of the will and have been duly qualified.

Officers arrested two youths this week in the store of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., 9th and Olive Sts., where they attempted to buy a watch and tendered in payment a check, which was considered suspicious. The two young men entered the store and asked to be shown some men’s watches, and finally selected one for $150. In making payment a check for $689, payable to Mrs. S. F. Christy, and signed by a local investment concern, was offered. Officials in the store sent for the police to investigate, and the two were taken in custody for questioning by the authorities. Later the police reported that one of them admitted that the check had been abstracted from the house mail box of the party to whom the check was made out, and the pair were held.
