Re: Some Birmingham Information and Advertisements
Deykin, (J.& W.H.), (& Son), (& Harris) of Jennens Row, Birmingham, Warwickshire
These are some “contributors notes”, mainly dates referenced while researching a post relating to the “Prussian Silver” trademark used by Deykin & Son in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
The Deykin name has been associated with the Birmingham electroplated cutlery trade for a considerable period, but the start was as a button maker. Although said to have had a late !8th century (1780's) beginning, the earliest record that I had access to was 1828.
1828-29. Pigot & Co.'s Directory of Ches, Cumb Part 2 Notts - Yorks & N Wales "Birmingham"

..................Deykin James & Wm. Henry (gilt, plated, &c.) 6 Jennen's Row
.................Deykin Js.& Wm.Hen.(pearl) 6 Jennen's rw
The concern remained in the button business in subsequent trade directory entries until the mid 1850’s.

............Deykin Wm. Henry, button manufactr.(J.& W.H.Deykin),Highfield Rd
............Deykin James, button manufactr. (J. & W. H. Deykin), 33 Calthorpe St
By this next directory entry there had been a change and there was an additional business headed by William Henry Deykin making German Silver electro-plated spoons. All this was occurring at 6 Jennen's Row. In some records this address is qualified with 24 “Masshouse lane” and “St. Bartholomew Square”.
1858 General & Commercial Directory of Birmingham
.............Deykin James and Wm., plated button mkrs, 6, Jennen's row
.............Deykin and Sons, mfrs of electro-plated German Silver spoons, 6, Jennen's row
............Deykin Wm. Hy., electro-plated spoon mfr, h, 11, Highfield rd (home address?)
1867 Post Office Directory of Birmingham
Jennen’s row, St. Bartholomew sq. 24 Masshouse la
............6 Deykin Jas.& Wm. gilt button manfs
............6 Deykin & Sons, electro platers &c
The following 1875 directory entry shows the address has become 1 to 6 Jenning's Row (error??) and both cutlery & buttons are being made though production of the latter ceased not long after.
1875 White & Co.'s Commercial & Trades Directory of Birmingham, Vol. II
Spoon & Fork, Fish, Fruit Knife, &c. Mfrs.(Silver German Silver and Electro PIated)
..............Deykin and Son, 1 to 6, Jennens row
Button Manufacturers-General
.............Deykin Jas. and Wm., 1 to 6 Jenning's Row
The next change was circa 1895 when the partnership Deykin & Harrison (William Redfern Deykin & Walter Andrew Harrison) was formed. There was a silver mark registered for “D&H” at the Birmingham Assay Office in June 1895.
1896-97 Peck's Trades Directory of Birmingham,
ELECTRO-PLATED WARES.......... Deykin & Harrison (spoons and forks) Jennens row
BRITANNIA METAL WARES. .........Deykin & Harrison, 3 to 6 Jennens row
1914 Bennett's Business Directory for Warwickshire, Birmingham Trades & Traders
BRITANNIA METAL WARE MANFRS. ........Deykin & Harrison, Ltd., Jennens Row
Silversmiths .........Deykin & Harrison, Ltd., Jennens Row (the entry in fact says “Deakin & Harrison, Ltd”, mistake??)
Deykin & Harrison Ltd seem to cease trading on at the end of the 1930’s.
There are quite a lot of other posts on our Forum featuring "Deykin" including some in this "Birmingham" section and of course the one I mentioned that generated this list of trade directory entries.

Jubilee Medals Galore
The Birmingham jewelers are working night and day in connection with the jubilee. They have made 15,000,000 medals and 6,000,000 brooches, their orders coming from all over the world. If the medals made were placed rim to rim they would extend 293miles, and if placed one above another would form a column thirty miles high. Jubilee medals made in Germany are also coming into England.
