Progressive Jewelry Advertising

The Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., St. Louis, Mo., keep continually at it in an advertising way, and always have some refreshing store news for readers.

“Picture one of these on your Finger,” is the caption recently used by this firm, in a space of eight-inches, double column. The pen and ink sketches of the rings look well. Under each sketch is a terse description with the price. The regular text of the announcement is excellently done.

“Diamond jewelry of Superior Quality,” was the title of another advertisement used by the same concern, in a space of 8½ inches, three columns wide.

Investment value is well emphasized in the firm’s announcement headed, “Diamonds. that Pay for Themselves Many Times,” reduced from a space of 8½ inches, triple column.

Nor does the concern cease advertising in Summer. “Be Proud of Your Cuffs” carries. a stimulating suggestion for the thoughtful dresser in the Summertime. This was a single column announcement and originally occupied nine inches. The range of price is broad enough to appeal to a varied clientele.

St. Louis Jewelers Feature Diamonds

St. Louis, Oct. 22.—National Diamond Week or “Diamond Days” was observed to some extent here although jewelers as a unit did not take part in the plan to push these precious stones and bring the attention of the public to them in any concerted way. Several of the leading local dealers featured diamonds in the advertising copy during the week, among them the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co.; Selle Jewelry Co.; Heffern-Neuhoff Jewelry Co. and the Jaccard Jewelry Co.

The most effective publicity stunt for the week was an address on “Diamonds” broadcast over KMOX, “the Voice of St. Louis,” through the courtesy of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co. This talk was delivered by A. F. Eisenbeiss, vice-president and manager of the diamond department of the Eisenstadt Mfg. Co., who spoke during the evening hour, on Sunday, Oct. 14, his talk embracing some history of this precious stone as well as information as to sources of supply and distribution of them. His address was “on the air” during the evening educational program and was appreciated.

One of the Olive St. display windows of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., at Ninth St., was the objective of many passersby during the past week. The window was trimmed to display a handsome set of gold flatware, containing a service for 24 persons and shown in a handsome wooden chest. The service comprised 553 pieces in all, and attracted more than a passing attention while on display during the week.

ST. LOUIS

A well attended meeting of members of the local retail jewelry trade was held at the Hotel Statler last week at which Bartley J. Doyle, of Philadelphia, gave an interesting address in which he outlined the plans and purposes of the Jewelry Trades Association now in process of formation, and which will include the several branches of the trade. Over 100 dealers were present and at the close of the talk most of them signed membership cards in the organization. Leo C. Vogt, president of the Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., presided at the meeting.

The Hess & Culbertson Jewelry Co., Ninth and Olive Sts., has discontinued its optical department, and given the additional floor space to the gift shop. The extra space approximately, 12 by 20 feet, has been attractively decorated with new furniture, whatnots, end tables, and a luxurious carpet. The customers who visit the jewelry repair department must of necessity walk through a part of the gift shop. A great many of these customers stop and inspect the merchandise which is neatly displayed. Miss Emma Keitz has been buyer for the gift shop for the last three years, and the department has shown a substantial increase each year.
