JOHN HAY
Leith
LOST, A PEARL LOCKET BROOCH
There was lost on Thursday last, a gold locket brooch, set with pearls, containing hair, and engraved with an inscription on the back, which has since been offered at the different shops for sale.
The person that found it, or anyone who may now possess it, will be handsomely rewarded, by returning it to Mr Hay, Jeweller, Leith.
Leith, 30th June 1813.
Source: Caledonian Mercury - 5th July 1813
A CURIOUS SNUFF BOX
The attention of the connoisseurs has been lately attracted to a curious natural production; it is an elegent and unique curiosity, in the possession of Mr Hay, Jeweller, Leith. It consists of a large snuff box, formed out of a very beautiful agate, with a fine jasper top, in the centre of which is an Egyption pebble - the chief object of admiration - as it contains a profile of that consummate statesman, the late Right Honourable William Pitt; the likeness which is remarkably striking, is the work of nature, altogether unaided by art. The association of the several stones, and the judicious manner in which they are mounted, is highly creditable to Mr Hay's taste.
Source: Caledonian Mercury - 16th December 1815
Robbery at John Hay's Shop
Early on Sunday morning, the shop of Mr Hay, Jeweller, Leith, was robbed of property to considerable amount. The villains effected their purpose in a very systematic way, by perforating the shutters with a centre-bit. We understand that several petty robberies have also been committed of late on board the vessels in the harbour.

The Edinburgh AO website records him marrying Anne Morrison in Edinburgh in 1812 and the birth of a daughter in 1816. He became an Edinburgh burgess in 1817.
