The quest of the wedding or birthday present is often a difficult one, and many are the number of disappointed ones who are not blessed by discriminating friends in this respect. But none need give up hope and despair of selecting the really right and suitable gift after a walk through the delightful silver halls of Mappin Bros., 220, Regent Street, where case after case and shelf upon shelf are the homes of the most beautiful of presents either in gold, silver, or plate. Just at present Mappin Bros. have on show a most tasteful and choice collection of solid silver bowls, tea services in silver and plate, particularly their noted “Queen’s Plate,” any of which would be a crowning joy to the would-be married. For the more practical minded the splendid show of cutlery should give many hints for useful presents. For the readers of The Tatler who are more frequently in the City Mappins provide at their establishment, 66, Cheapside, a most bewildering exhibition of gold and silver objects of art.

The ladies’ rifle clubs in the colony of the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States now number nine, and a rifle meeting termed “ the Ladies’ Bisley” is held annually at Taiping. Every club has its practices weekly on fixed days; firing and competitions are carried on strictly under the National Rifle Association’s rules and regulations. The clubs are under the guidance of a council consisting of a president, secretary, and a representative from every club. Our photograph depicts a fine challenge shield, modelled and manufactured by Messrs. Mappin and Webb, Ltd., of 158-162, Oxford Street, Use 2, Queen Victoria Street, E.C.; and 220, Regent Street, W., which is offered for competition among the various clubs in the district.
