Rank Amateur Needs help with dating.

Post by onlyoneMatt »

Hi. Never had any need to look at a hallmark before, This is quite fascinating (but seriously confusing) isn't it. I am an amateur watch maker, until now focussing on 1950+ wristwatches. I have now aquired a vintage pocket watche in need of restoration, looks like it is going to be a fun project. For my own interest I would like to date this timepeice, from a movement point of view I would say it is 100-150 years old. From information garnered here This is my first shot at hallmark deciphering, some of the symbols and fonts look pretty similar.

I think Chester is the Office. And the Date 1890. Am I right, wrong, nearly right, completely wrong ?. Would appreciate help. Thanks
Matt.

A good possibility for the case manufacturer is James Richardson.
He entered his JR in an oval mark in Chester on October 2, 1876.

Thanks, folks.

Love forums, people sharing the knowledge just because they can.
