MW Newcastle Spoon, "P" Date Letter, No Duty Mark.

Post by Essexboy Found »

Hello, have any of the Forum members needed to use the super informative web site silvermakersmarks.co.uk, run by "Phil", one of our co administrators, very recently, to look up a "M" something in the listing of silversmiths with work hallmarked at Newcastle? If so regular "viewers" likely will have noted a new "MW" silversmith in the list. The maker's mark was on a "P" spoon with no duty mark and the "MW" entry has the comment "not shown by Gill". The image below shows the 22cms (about 9 inches) long server spoon.

With the absence of a duty mark on the spoon, the P date letter would be for 1781.
I knew the "MW" maker was not referenced in Margaret Gill's Handbook of Newcastle silver and thought a candidate for the maker may be a Scottish provincial maker (I do not know who) as there have been other Scottish silversmiths who have sporadically used the Newcastle Assay Centre.

Extra pictures below show more the style of the spoon. I hope these can generate a bit of discussion and hopefully information on possible owners of the "MW" mark
