Help me please to identify the silversmith.

Post by Elena Russ »

Hello, dear Sirs.

I have the article with mark «R&RK» only. The same mark I have found in Edinburg, and it belongs to R & R Keay, 1828 — 1837. Can I suppose that my item was manufactured by this silversmith, or I am wrong? Are this tongs silver? Thank you.

Hi,

Yes, it would be silver. The 'R & RK' mark identifies the partnership of Robert Keay and his nephew, also named Robert. The partnership worked in Perth, Scotland. The other mark is the double-headed eagle, the symbol taken from the arms of Perth. As with much of their output, it was not sent to the assay office, therefore it lacks official hallmarks.
