An 1871 advertisement for George Cults.



George Cults's set up must have been a large undertaking, as John Culme in his 'Directory of Gold & Silversmiths', in the details of George Wish, states: 'George Wish is said to have commenced his career in 1863 in the employ of his uncle, George Cults, an electroplate manufacturer of Sheffield, for whom he travelled the Continent and in India.'

Hello Trev,

There is no mention of George Cults in the published Sheffield register. However a George Cutts (sic) of 33 Broad Street is mentioned as having registered a mark, a G and a C in separate rectangles, on 4th March 1872. Presumably the spelling Cutts is a transcription error.

Just to muddy the waters some more, here we have G. Cutts & Sons of the Park Silver Plate Works, 29, Broad Street, Sheffield.

Further research confirms the surname was Cutts.
George Cutts was born in Sheffield in 1819. On the 1851 Census he is shown as a foreman in a Britannia (Metal) Works. By 1861 he was an electroplate manufacturer employing 14 men, 3 boys and (what appears to be the figure) 34 girls. By 1871 he employed 20 men, 4 boys and 29 women; 1881 7 men and 4 women. He was a widower living with relatives by 1891 and a retired plate blade striker. He died sometime before 1901.
His son William born 1852 was a clerk in an electroplate works (probably his father’s works) in 1871. In 1881 he had become manager presumably in George Cutts & Sons; by 1891 he was living on his own means and by 1901 he was in the workhouse.
His son George junior born 1854 was also a clerk in an electroplate works in 1871, a manager by 1881 and also living on his own means in 1891. By 1901 he was a railway porter.
It looks as though the business enjoyed rapid expansion in the period from the middle to late 1850’s and remained substantial through to the 1870’s, began to contract by 1881 and failed for whatever reason before 1891.

It is interesting to note that in 1866 he had a branch in Scarborough, a seemingly strange choice of location.

Oddly enough the 'Cults' advertisements appear to have run for at least five years during the period 1870 - 1875, as noted in a variety of 'Black's Travel Guides'.

It's strange that Wish, who appears to have been successful up until his death, aged 82, in 1928, left his cousins in such a dire situation.

William Gallimore started electro plating in 1858 and as working silversmiths they entered their mark at the Sheffield Assay Office in 1867. They became William Gallimore & Sons in 1891 and converted into a limited liability company in 1923.

This, I suspect, is the business of George Shadford Lee, prior to his entry into partnership with Henry Wigfull in 1871 to form the well known firm of Lee & Wigfull (see above post).

Curiously though, the trade mark has the letters 'H.W.' placed underneath it, perhaps an early indication of Henry Wigfull's involvement.
