N. Roth coin silver

I have a set of coin silver spoons marked N. Roth, Utica NY. They have been in our family for at least 4 generations. We understood that when our grandparents were married, they sent in their silver dollar wedding presents and had them made into silverware. Is this correct and are they fairly common?

Thank you. After posting my question, I double checked my ancestors and the spoons belonged to Nelson and Matilda Emmons. They were married about 1831. Their son, Wet William Emmons, born in Rochester, NY in 1832, was married to Dell Kellogg, daughter of Asa Kellogg.
As I polished the spoons today, I thought about all the generations of women who have polished them. I decided to write the geneology down and taped it to the plaque they are displayed on. Six generations! The spoons are getting pretty old, the engraving is almost illegible!

Hope nobody minds just the slightest detail from the internet that may not always be available. The Utica Directory 1858-59 published by Joseph Arnott, printed by Dewitt C Grove, 113 Genesee St., Utica, NY lists
Nelson Roth as a jeweler at 175 Genesee.

Indications are that by 1860 Nelson Roth was working as a jeweler in St Louis, Missouri and died there in 1866.
