Silver Brooch French? Help needed to identify maker

Post by nmdc114 »

Hi everyone.

I recently purchased this brooch for my wife but we would like to find out who it is by. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the poor quality of the hallmarks but the brooch is quite petite and this was the closest we could get. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

Yes it is French.
The crab is the mark for 0.800 silver on small items.
It is in use from 1962.

Thank you for the information, it is much appreciated. Do you know what the other mark represents?

Believe the crab guarantee mark was put into use in 1838. The other is the maker's mark, can you post a clearer picture?

As I understand it, from 1838, on small items, the boar head denoted pieces from Paris, the crab for pieces made in other provinces.

Ahhh, Tardy states that in 1962, the Paris "Wild Boar's Head" was abolished and replaced by the "Crab" mark w/o symbol as already in use. So from 1838 both marks, from 1962 on the crab was the only small guarantee mark in use.
