I need help with marks on this Sterling Tray

Postby silverstudent » Sat Jul 28, 2007 2:43 pm

I have a beautiful grape and cable heavy sterling silver tray. It has 3 marks that are kind of faded. Thefirst appears to be an animal with a short tail. The second appears to be the side profile of a man's head looking left. He looks like he has a big nose and a long beard. The third mark is very hard to see and appears to be some sort of eagle or something with wings OR it could be a crown (?) Please help me find who made this. I have searched thoroughly and can't find anything like these marks. thanks, silverstudent

I am replying to my own request....It looks like this has been viewed 145 times but no real replies (?) Does that mean that these marks are difficult to trace? Does anyone know anything about even one of these marks? Thanks for any help that you can give! silverstudent

I'm sure you'd have an answer in the same day if you added a photo. This may help you to understand why.

You don't have to be "snooty" about it, Mr. admin. I am new to all of this and I don't know. If this is the kind of attitude that you display towards requests, I am not interested in continuing in this forum nor was I impressed by your asking if "sterling" was on it and then after my response receiving NOTHING back from you. Thanks for nothing.

That was straightforward honest advice and meant as such. Best of luck in your research endeavors.

Silverstudent - that was a totally uncalled for response. The administrator is most generous to maintain this site, was in no way "snooty" and the "sterling" question was important in narrowing down the search for your marks. The members here make sincere efforts at identification, taking the time to share their knowledge and resources - placing photos would be a helpful on your part.

Hello, It was VERY snooty and went well over "honest and straightforward". Thanks but no thanks. I will look elsewhere for my silver needs. Please remove me from this forum. silverstudent

I'm astonished to read such ingratitude. There was absolutely nothing snooty about the administrator's replies at all - his posts were clearly intended to help you get assistance from the forum members. Why else would he bother?

The beauty of this forum (the existence of which, by the way, is entirely due to the administrator) is that it connects a great number of silver enthusiasts, who are keen to share their knowledge with other members and help them identify silver marks. But at the end of the day, any person who starts a thread isn't guaranteed such help, especially if the task is made so much more difficult by a lack of pictures and ambiguity in the description. On the other hand, it's not like you pay for the service.

So how about trying again, with a picture of the marks on your silver plated tray?
