Coin Silver with no mark

I am wondering if a spoon that just has a name (J. Beyer) and 12oz. could be coin silver or even sterling? I am under the understanding that all sterling is marked but is all coin mark "coin" or have a symbol/symbols?

Without seeing a photo, it is difficult to tell about your spoon. With coin spoons, it is common for the spoon to only be marked with a maker's mark, a retailer's mark (the store that actually sold the item) or sometimes both. It was not clear from your posting whether the J. Beyer was a monogram or a maker's mark and whether the spoon is marked "12 oz" or just weighs that amount. Clarifying these would be helpful.

If this is a serving or table spoon, it may be plated. The mark of 12 oz would refer to the amount of silver used to plate a gross of spoons.
