Tankard??

Postby dinkum1017 » Tue Jun 19, 2007 9:02 am

Good Morning:

I need some help with a couple of things:

1. Is this a tankard? I'm questioning it because it has a spout. If it isn't a tankard, then what?

2. I'd like confirmation on my hallmark identification, which I've set out below:

Sterling Silver, London, 1762. The maker's mark is "JP" which I'm identifying as John Payne. The scratch weight is 27 ounces 6 pennyweights troy.

3. There are some additional scratches which I cannot identify. "02 dwt". Any ideas?

Thanks
Michelle

Firstly, I agree with you on the marks. Secondly, tankards/mugs should not have spouts. Have a closer look and you may see some untidy solder work indicative of a later addition. I also think the embossing was done in the early Victorian period.
