Need help identifying marks on basket

Postby dinkum1017 » Sat Jun 16, 2007 8:41 am

Good morning.

I have another puzzle. I have a basket and need some help. I have figured out it's sterling (lion passant). I can also make out the leopard's head. HOWEVER, the rest is a mystery to me:

First punch (maker's mark) is clear (maybe not in the photo tho): EIM; second punch (lion passant); third punch (looks like a lower case "b"); fourth punch (upper case "F") and last punch is the leopard's head. I've included two images of the marks as they are very small and I had to enlarge and the images tend to be blurred. Thanks again,

Michelle

This was imported into England and was hallmarked sterling in London in 1897. I don't know the maker's/importer's mark.

Wow, thanks. I wouldn't have figured this one out. Which punch let's you know that it's imported? What reference did you use to come to that conclusion? Thanks again, your information/knowledge is greatly appreciated.

The capital F stands for foreign.
I used Jackson's Hallmarks Pocket Edition, but every book on English hallmarks will have this info.
