Date for these two L letters?

Hello. A little silver pocket watch with floral designs at the dial. About 1 and half inches, keywound shows the L letter in two different shields: the inner cover shows one and the back cover shows another. Wht´s the year, then? thanks

The font for this L was only used in one letter sequence.

I think I am understanding. Please let me know if my reasoning is correct.
Do you mean that this type of L letter was only used in 1885?
If so, why there are 2 different shields? Do you know who may the shown initials belong to?

A letter L, in that font for Birmingham, is found for no year aside from 1885, so 1885 it is. There are sometimes variations in the cartouches surrounding the date letters. To be perfectly honest, I've never heard a satisfactory explanation as to why this is.
