Butter dish

I have a butter dish that appears to be silver it reads,(eagle)WMROGERS(star),with 987 below .It is very thin,soft and light weight .And the m in(wm) is underlined. Thanx for any info.

The Eagle/Wm Rogers/Star mark was used on silverplate by Simpson, Hall & Miller beginning in 1878. Simpson, Hall & Miler became part of the International Silver Company in 1898. International continued to use this mark, but I don't know for how long, possibly for decades.

I have to admit that I didn't know William Hazen Rogers (1801-1873) used this mark on coin silver from 1825 to about 1846. However, the information I gave you on Simpson, Hall & Miller using this mark, starting in 1878, on silverplate is correct. So your piece is either coin silver or silverplate.

I think the marks look modern,and cleanly done,is it possible the 987 refers to silver content? P.S. Im looking at a new camera soon.

I believe the number 987 is just a catalog or pattern number.
If your piece was made from 1825 to 1846 it would be coin silver (.900).
