Good day everyone,

I have received a cup looks like silver item but there is only one mark which is worn off in half. The other half of the mark looks like Middle East or Egyptian mark indicates 90. But really because it is worn off so I cannot identify if this is a silver mark or plated. There is no other mark down the bottom or elsewhere.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Yes,  silver ( 90/100) and perhaps Egypt. Over the one-hundred years of Egypt's hallmarking history there have been special occasions when uniquely designed hallmarks were used. These hallmarks were created either by special request from the then-reigning king, or to commemorate a special occasion and/or a special item. The following marks have limited documentation, but were known as special hallmarks used historically in Egypt. These hallmarks could be found both on domestic and exported items.

The “90” Arabic letter appears similar to an Egyptian hallmark on the book. Another possibility I considered is a Turkish Tughra mark; however, a Tughra is usually far more intricate in appearance than this. I’m also unsure whether this mark has actually worn away.

If it had truly worn off, the decorative scratches around the mark should also show wear, but they do not. This leads me to think that it may either have been improperly marked or is something different from a Tughra altogether.
