Georgian Butter Pat

Hi all,
This one had the better of me.
I can't make out the maker - save ending in '& Co' but while ideal to identify and appreciate guidance, is not my primary query.

There is no Assay office but the date letter (x) has maybe a crown above it and while it most closely matches Sheffield 1797 the crown (if it is a crown) above the letter 'x' does not. Everything else is in line, lion passant, duty mark of Geo. III, correct oval cartouche for the assay/date.

Seeking confirmation that this is Sheffield 1797 and if not - confirmation of an alternative.

Cheers from 'downunder'.

I think the date is 1817, the maker will take a bit more deciphering.

Thanks Martin,
but it presents that the date mark (oval cartouche with a symbol above the X) looks nothing like Sheffield 1817 (square cartouche with only an X) - unless you are refering to an alternative Assay Hall.
cheers
Stuart.

Date is quite definitely 1817 and the makers are James Kirkby & Joseph Waterhouse trading as James Kirkby, Waterhouse & Co. This form of the hallmark with crown and date letter combined was used by Sheffield on smaller items from 1780 to 1853 with varying styles of crown and position.

Hi Phil, many thanks - and for the links demonstrating - so two very different sets of hallmarks. Thank you. S.
