Italy hallmark Id

Post by panatha »

Hi there.
Tha spoon and the forks lace only the first hallmark. The knifes has two hallmarks.
The first mean 800 silver I think.
The second mean that is 20-25 grammars of silver on the knife?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

What you have is a resin base covered with a layer of silver. To identify such pieces and so that they are not to be confused with solid silver items, as they do contain a full set of Italian marks, the Italian government required some extra marks to be struck. These extra marks are a 'R' within a square, this stands for 'Riempito' (filled), and also a set of figures that indicate the amount of silver applied, in grams (1÷2 g, 2÷3 g, 3÷5g, etc.). These are not exact weights, but must fit into range stated by each mark. In your case the handles contain between 20 and 25 grams of silver.

For details of the maker, A. Cesa & C., see:

Yes, the other cutlery is solid silver.
The knives are made of two shells stamped and soldered together.
The void is then filled with sand to a certain height and then with a molten lead alloy that, as it cools, secures the blade.
