Small silver ring — possibly “dog head” small mark + separate “3” (Austria-Hungary 1867–72?) — motif question

Post by Happylemon »

Hello—I've read the 925-1000 website and searched prior threads but didn’t find an exact match. Posting per guidelines with an overall photo and close-ups of the marks.

Found in southern Sweden.
Hallmarks (hard to read): a tiny elongated/oval punch that might be the dog head small-article mark, plus a separate small rectangular punch “3”. No Swedish import or cat’s-paw marks observed.

We don’t know the hallmark for sure; based on shapes and the separate “3” we suspect the Austro-Hungarian system, with “3” = .800 and the early practice (1867–1872) of placing fineness in a separate punch. Alternative possibility: the later Hungarian small mark (1937–1966) without an office letter.

Motif (our best read): a floral rosette/spiral “whiplash” head with S-curved shoulders — likely Art Nouveau.

Questions:
– Can anyone confirm A-H small mark + separate “3” (1867–72) vs. the later Hungarian variant (1937–66)?
– Does the motif read as Art Nouveau floral/whiplash to you? Any thoughts on maker/region/date window or close comparables?

Hello Happylemon,

this hallmark is a Czechoslovakian silver mark from the period between 1949 and 1962. If you turn it upside down, you’ll notice a rabbit’s head, along with the number 3, which indicates a silver content of 90%.

Best regards,
David
