Mystery marks on “Boucheron” box

Post by Peartree »

Hi. I have bought this very Paul Legrand style box usually retailed by Boucheron c 1890. The marks are unclear asides Minerva’s head. Can anyone identify them? I may well have photographed the marks the wrong way round etc. Thank you Anthony

Unfortunately, the maker's mark is too faint and incomplete to be identifiable. Perhaps you can find another mark on the box, there is often one on each part. The lock of hair on Minerva's temple shows that the box was hallmarked in Paris, however the countermark of an insect, struck with the bigorne (engraved angle) is too incomplete to date.

Thank you. The box dates to c 1880-1900 for sure. The makers mark to the lid is struck across the chased design and completely unclear. A great shame!
