Arts & Crafts Hand Hammered Silver Tray

Postby thursday445 » Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:09 pm

I would like to know if anyone can confirm that this mark is Porter Blanchard. Did he work in 800 silver as well as sterling? Tray is not marked sterling. Any information is helpful. Thank you.

Hi,
No, it is not a Porter Blanchard mark. All indicators point to European make. It would be helpful towards a more exact ID, if you could post photos of all of the marks on the piece.

That is the only mark on the piece. It is hand hammered; large 21 1/2 inches by 15 1/2 inches. I thought I had years ago seen that as a Porter Blanchard mark in a book, that is now in my storage facility. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry, not Blanchard, the mark is PBC. Blanchard worked in Sterling and also did some pewter work, but all are marked as such. The lack of a silver standard mark of any sort tells us that it is most likely not silver. Silver is a premium commodity, makers of solid silverware do not usually leave the material in doubt, but go out of the way, by the use of various markings, to draw attention to it.
