sliver marks on piece

Postby Patience » Mon Feb 12, 2007 1:48 am

I don't have capability at this time to send a picture, but my question is mainly what the marks on my silver piece mean - are they manufacturer's marks or in reference to silver in general- so I will know better where to look for info. I have much time on the web and have not been able to find answers. I have an old pair of sugar tongs and there is a total of 5 marks on the piece, each one in a circle. They are: A.S. - & - G.R. - S - EP. I have seen EPNS on other pieces, but only EP on this one. I am new to this so please excuse if these are elementary questions. Thanks for helping.

Hi there

EP stands for electro plated - i.e. silverplate

AS & GR would be the plater - don't know them myself, but reckon Pat will know.

Sounds like British silverplate marks to me. The S after the manufacturers initials often stands for Sheffield, England.
Checked my British silverplate references, but could not find anything close to AS & GR.

Pat.
