Religious relief showing Saint Jerome

Post by JohnnyBre »

Hello all,

I am Jonathan from Germany and this is my first topic. :-)

From an inheritance I have obtained a religious relief (showing San Girolamo) made of silver.

I am struggling to find out how old it is and what the silver marks may mean...

On "dieschatzkisteimnetz.de" we think we found out that one mark is a "marcus lion", so it might be from venetia.

Acc. to " Rosenberg, Marc; Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen (Band 4): Ausland und Byzanz — Frankfurt a.M., 1928 " this mark (marcus lion with FP) was used on silver mountings in the basilica of padua (St. Antonio).

So I guess that the FP may mean "Filippo Parodi" (architect and sculptor, 1630 - 1702) who was master builder of the santuario of St. Antonio in the late 17th century.

May I ask if anyone can help me with this? What do the marks mean?

Now that I finished writing, I´d like to add some pictures, but I do not know how...

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

With best regards,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan
The lion of San Marcp above various initials is a mark often found in Venetian silver from the 18th century (also late 17th and early 19th).
They are considered to be the marks of assayers or mint officials. Several have been detected with the letters FP, with or without dots, but I don't think Mr Filippo Parodi has anything to do with any of these.
Among other things, it seems to me that I'm reading FR, not FP.
As for the other mark, the one that immediately comes to mind is the "al Trofeo" shop's mark, even if here it seems deformed, perhaps due to a double stroke.
