Post by John Dunn »

I cannot seem to identify this hallmark. I believe it is french - it was purchased at a dutch auction. Could someone please give me some advice?

Hi John, welcome to the forum. Believe it to be not French but from Belgium. Believe to recognize the Greek warrior head, in a round shield used 1831-1869, but we need better, enhanced images of all marks to make sure.

Peter.

OK, here we go with improved images.

Image
The letter V with scales, the mark of assayer Armand Joseph VandenHende, born in the Belgian city of Oudenaarde ca. 16-12-1796, active in Leuven 1831-1836, and active in Gent 1836-1869

Indeed the Greek warrior head, the Belgian assay office mark. In its helmet the regional assay office letter C for Gent, not visible in this image. Also missing is the standard mark either the 2nd standard; the Janus head for silver minimum 833/000, or 1st standard mark minimum 934/000.

The mark a crucible carrier above D. The maker's mark of gold & silver smith, jeweller and diamond setter; Henricus DeCurte, born in Gent 21-5-1821. Married to Amelie Bourgeois. Henricus worked/registered in Gent 1848-> 1868 (dead).
The ciborium is made between 1836-1869.
