Silver snuff box with winged insect hallmark

Post by JoshR »

Hi all, was hoping you could help me identify the hallmarks on this silver snuff box. The person working at the antiques shop mentioned it might be Portuguese, but I’m unable to find anything online. Any info is much appreciated!

Well, the mark that can be seen to the left of the 800 is certainly Italian.
It's incomplete, so I can only give you clues
If the number is 235, as it seems, or 236 these numbers are possible in only four cities Alessandria, Florence, Milan and Vicenza. If you can see some trace of the letters to the right of the number, we can make some guesses.
However, the butterfly with Ste above and M below sounds very un-Italian, I would say more French.

Hi Amena,

Thanks for that insight - really helpful! I’ve snapped another photo and inverted it. It looks like it’s 236 and potentially the letter “A” after. I’ve also attached a photo of the two rectangular hallmarks - but struggling to decipher what they might be.

Thanks,
Josh

As a reminder to always show all marks, together with the first question. The unclear marks in a rectangular frame are twice the French weevil mark, import mark for silver with attachment (hinged)
For more information about the French weevil see:

Thank you Peter!

So after doing a bit of digging, and with the help of Amena and Peter, I believe it may have been from one of the following, but most likely the first line:

236AL - BISSONE Elisa, Via Circumvallazione Est, 22, VALENZA, mark entered 14/07/1943 (out of business between 1955 and 1971)

236FI - RIDI Alfredo, Via della Chiesa 59, FIRENZE, mark entered 06/10/1951 (active at 31/12/1971)
236MI - CREPERIO Enrico, Via Pattari, 6, MILANO, mark entered 21/06/1937 (active at 31/12/1971)
236VI - INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE, mark entered c. 1957 (out before 1971)
(Source: https://www.silvercollection.it/italianhallmarks.html)

And subsequently imported into France, due to the two Weevil stamps.

This just leaves the mark with STE, butterfly, M, unaccounted for...

I also think it's more likely
236 AL = Bissone Elisa
I assume that "Ste" over the butterfly stands for "Societé".
Just to know :
236 VI = ZIGLIOTTO Giampietro, Strada Veronese, 82, Vicenza
