I have this egyptian revival compote/bowl that I am having a hard time trying to find out who the maker is. It stands 7 inches high and measures 12 1/2 inches across from handle to handle. On the bottom on the inside it is very hard to read. I have taken many pics, but so far can't figure out who the name is. It looks something like Joe F....... Maybe I am wrong. It has Silver with what looks like a whale under it and under that trademark 523. On the base of this there are the numbers 5320 with a W over a D. Does anyone know who the maker is on this. Hopefully my pictures will show up!! Thank you.
The letters are from Greek Alphabet.
The first one first two are lamda ( L ) and epsilon ( E ), epsilon must be read like the "e" from the word "end", The third and fourth are a Dipthong,
When two vowels combine to make one sound, it is called a dipthong. So the third and fourth come togheter and are like "ei" in "freight". Don't know the last character.
American silverplate, Rainwater shows the mark as unascribed, don't believe I've seen it IDed anywhere. Would guess that your piece dates from the 1920s.
