Help needed with marks on spectacles

Post by juantotree »

Hi

Does anyone know the origin of these marks? They were difficult to photograph as they are so small.

Many Thanks
Martin

Hi Martin, I believe I see, far right, the hallmark of Rome used 18/19th century, "crossed keys of St. Peter under a liturgical umbrella".

Hello
You have a French maker’s mark in a lozenge-shaped reserve for Crouvezier, and a French hare-head guarantee mark used 1819-1838. See below for full information:

Thank you both very much for the information. So these were made in Paris and subsequently imported to Rome and marked there?

It is 889/1000 (second standard). Not necessarily Rome of there is a letter code for provinces of Bologna, Ferrara, Forlì and Ravenna where the same marks were used.
I cannot tell if there is letter, though.

Hello Martin
Yes, made in Paris, 1819-1838 by a well-known spectacles maker.

Thanks to you all for your help. AG2012, I have had a good look with a loupe, I cant make out what it is but it does not look like a letter.

Try to post a focused photo of that mark, possibly taken with an additional lens.
If you don't have one of the ones they sell, you can make a self-made one very easily.

Ok, I have managed to get a better image of the mark (thanks Amena).

Still not sure what it is, a wine glass, pine cone? any thoughts?

As Peter says, it is the papal tiara over the crossed keys of St. Peter.
Your mark is strikingly similar to Rome's one, which has no letter under the keys.

Note in particular the angled right infula.
It is likely that the clear part you see is just a difference in color and not a relief..
