Sydney Hanna hallmark?

Post by Playford79 »

I have a masonic jewel.

The box says R McDowell & CO, Belfast

The other hallmarks indicate Birmingham assay and Sterling silver and 1958 I think.

Is the maker Sydney Hanna of Belfast or another maker? Hanna was a prominent Mason and connected to R McDowell? S.H hallmark?

Or is it another maker, the links in the database appear to be dead for both makers.

Thanks in advance! Will upload a pick below.

I can confirm that your identification of the hallmark is correct, but I am unable to identify SH, neither as Sydney Hanna nor anybody else. I would be interested to know how you arrived at Sydney Hanna as a possibility.

The item is an irish masonic jewel supplied by r McDowell in Belfast, apparently there is a connection between r McDowell and Sydney Hanna. Sydney Hanna was also a prominent Mason so it seems logical enough he made Masonic Items that were resold in other jewelry shops?

The connection between the two is mentioned in your hallmark listings, I can't see any pictures.

He was clearly a senior Mason. Interesting to see he left R McDowell in 1940 to set up for himself.

Hmmm. Perhaps R McDowell just bought in from Birmingham?
