Hanau box,possible Maker?
Hanau box,possible Maker?
Hello Members
This Hanau box has pseudo marks for Ausgburg and Numberg, and another mark ,is this a makers mark?
Also 2 import marks for Austria. 1902-1922.
Can we tell the maker from these marks ? are these know marks?
Regards Guido.

Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
For Mark 1-->>s518, displayed with bottom notation stating recorded in Neresheimer section. For Mark 3-->>see extra unknown iddity item (?) below the small sized s498 sample in the Neresheimer group. Two marks pointing toward one known maker, but is it conclusive. As to Mark 2, I count 11 inside pips which does not match the samples given but perhaps appears on some other item previously submitted...might require some searching.

Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
Hello Traintime
Many thanks for your reply and comments.
Looks like mark no 3 is not known,at this stage .
I did not know the amount of pips ,was for different makers.
the clue maybe which companies used the N in circle.
May be a Nereshiemer made box? style of top (Teniers scene ,may also help)which were the companies that did similar scenes?
Regards Guido.

Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
Hi,
It is Neresheimer. N in a circle is pseudo mark for Nuremberg, indiscriminately used by several Hanau silversmiths.
I have seen double beakers with both pseudo Nuremberg and pesudo Augsburg marks.
Interesting assay office in Austria-Hungary import mark; looks like smaller office (letter and number).
What is it ?
Regards

Hello AG
Many thanks for your reply and comments,That's great .Thanks for confirming Neresheimer as the maker.
It does not surprise me ,as they were one of the largest makers at that time.
The Letter is A 1 ,not sure number?
I have attached image.
Is this unusual to have this import mark?
Great work again AG.
Regards Guido.

Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
It`s Vienna, what looks like 1 under A is the front leg of letter A.

Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
Hello Ag
Many thanks .
the mark is supposed to be A for Neustadt 1867-1922, is that right. or is it Vienna?
I do feel there is a small 1 there.
Regards Guido.

Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
Back to Mark 2...I believe we can confirm your clean sample matches that of Mark 2 [npr] in Group 4 of Neresheimer samples. That one is sideways and roughly stamped but seems to set up the 3-4-3-1 pip pattern. Nice that you now have a clear view of what that stamp should properly look like. And if it is not turning up elsewhere, then possibly one that Neresheimer never shared with any other firms?
Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
Mark 3, the noted "oddity", could be a remnant of an internal element of s536 if that punch were worn down. [The footnotes indicate that the mark had likely been mis-attributed to the wrong firm due to confusion over the sailing ship co-mark, and rightfully belongs with the Neresheimer sets.]
Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
Perhaps at this point it might be helpful to record exacting metric measurements of the size of these marks. Maybe there are different versions as small and large marks? [Can't tell from the images the relative size compared to the whole object.]
Re: Hanau box,possible Maker?
Hi Traintime
many thanks for your assistance and suggestions.
All the marks are the same size 3mm .
I did not notice the oddity mark (s536) before,it is definitely the same mark as on my box. Interesting thoughts on mark2 ,may be you are right.
Looks like there is no doubt that Neresheimer were the maker.
Great forum for working out some of these issues.
Regards Guido.

Many thanks AG.
These marks are so small ,very hard to get good images ,sometimes in tricky places.
