Maker?only 1letter ,meaning of letter M ,date?

Hi Members
Worn marks is it possible To work out maker? I do not understand what letter M stands for,Not valuable box ,worn through on top a few small sections.
date N maybe London1868? Appreciate any thoughts.

The hallmark is a Birmingham mark with the date letter "u" for 1894. The maker's mark would be HM - Henry Matthews. The M may have had meaning for the maker but has no meaningful significance for us now.

Many thanks for your quick reply and solving the mystery.
That makes sense ,I can read fine scratched in on base Xmas 1895,would not come out on photo.
