Spoon dated 1762 with crest and monogram

Postby silverfan » Wed Sep 22, 2021 6:55 am

The spoon is 20,7 cm long and weighs 67 grams. The stem bears the maker's mark which I read WJ, then lion and leopard's head and on the right what must be the date letter which i cannot identify. Does anybody know the maker?

Date letter is "m" - 1767. Maker's mark is WT, but the name is unknown due to the very annoyingly lost registers from that period, the 1739-1758 Smallworkers' Register and the 1758-1773 Largeworkers' Register.

Thanks silvermakersmarks, but 1767 does not match the engraved 1762. What could be the reason?

Impossible to say what was the reason for the engraved 1762. But 1767 is most definitely the assay date (or 1767/68 to be completely accurate as the assay year started at the end of May).

Agree with Phil. Perhaps the the engraving on the spoon was to commemorate an event, (marriage, birth, etc.) that happened five years earlier.
