Russian Silver Oclad

Postby Caligula007 » Thu May 20, 2021 1:23 pm

Hi Guys,

I have a beautiful silver oklad of an icon here. I know the following:

Year of origin 1908-1917

Saint Petersburg city mark

I just can't find out which master this is.

I would be really grateful for help.

greetings
Marcel

Sorry, the explanation is a little too easy.

The icon is 100% from around 1900, the history of the icon and the Oklad can be traced back to shortly before 1950

Enthusiasm is not a method of judgment.
Provenance is seldom, if ever, reliable. Most often it`s only stories of great, great ancestors who played an important part in Russian court and had to emigrate during the revolution.
All said, we should rely on decades on experience with genuine and faked marks; unfortunately the latter have become predominant lately.
Due to historical circumstances (collapse of Communist regimes in eastern Europe) ,all of a sudden, people became ``religious`` and new trend was widely exploited by fakers (compare with 100% fakes of ``Imperial Russian Judaica``).
Some fakes are obvious, some more difficult to disclose (painted on old wood, better marks etc.).
Can you find both marks on auras around the heads of the saints ? ( Like the example shown bellow).
Because those are separate, detachable parts of silver риза and are supposed to be marked accordingly.

Btw, including Jesus with aura (halo) on top, six more marks are needed, either full or secondary.

Enthusiasm for sure;) But the fact is that the icon was owned by the family since before 1950.

Nevertheless, thank you very much for your time

Hi!
The assay marks on the riza are correct. Unfortunately, I can only offer an extract from Ivanov-Skurlov's book. Look some Workshops in St. Petersburg with a maker's mark "ПА" of your icon's time period. To your choose. To whom, specifically, the "ПА" belongs, I don't know.
