Belgium Hall Mark - A.800

Hello everyone. I found flatware that is marked "A.800". I'd like to confirm that this is actually 800/1000 silver. The only thing that is making me doubt myself is the "A". I think that the letter indicates which year it was made in and the country which is Belgium. If anyone has any more info please let me know. Thanks! Buu.

Here is a close-up of the knives and another hallmark. I read on here that A.800 is Belgium. Do you think it could be 800 silver plate? Thank you for the insight!

I think amena is right. A.800 is not Belgian. The flatware lookes like the well-known Italian items which are marked with 800 but are only plated.silverfan

Definitely silverplate.

Look at the difference between cutlery with a silver handle where you can clearly see the connection between the handle and the blade, while in your cutlery there is no solution of continuity.
This is the same type of scam brand as arg. 800.
I had never seen it before.

Never heard of 800 silver plated before? 800 usually stands for 80% silver and are common in European countries. Silver plating is 100% silver plated on a base metal.

No worried that some of my 800 Italian silver pieces may be plated.

Hello and oh yes, there is plating on objects made from silver 800 or even 925 fine. The company of Robbe and Berking e.g., one of the last remaining German makers of silver flatware does it on all of its sterling silver flatware. Sounds strange but there is a reason, actually two reasons: the resulting layer of silver 1000/1000 fine is a little softer than the base alloy which makes it a little easier and faster to give it a final high gloss finish. Plus the layer of 1000/1000 fine tarnishes a little slower than 800 silver or Sterling would. Two good reasons for this additional effort in production. All this does not apply here, this is a misleading A 800 mark, the base metal might even be just zinc. Regards, Bahner

Please note that you can find cutlery and other items marked "800 ARGENTO".

Those are really solid silver.

It's one of the more confusing areas I've run into, why this happened in Italy I do not understand. :::: It is confusing that some pieces from Italy marked (800) are actually solid silver, while other pieces are actually silver plated on top of base metal :::: This is a tricky area for the novice silver collector. ::::
