Unknown Mark on Silver Apostle Spoon

Postby morrisonmd1 » Wed Feb 03, 2021 8:37 pm

I came across four silver Apostle spoons that have markings on them. I could not identify the markings and would appreciate any help for this great group!

Thank you

Hi,
Your images cropped, combined and embedded. Next time you have a question take some time to embed pictures.
In regard of your apostle spoon, it is most likely Hanau, Germany with pseudo marks (reproductions of 17th century).Based on the mark far left I can recognize (red arrow): Schleissner or Neresheimer.

Could be Jezler?

Amena is right: Jezler of Schaffhausen family arms is another very probable possibility. This mark was seen in many variants.

Is it the real Jezler hallmark or is it a pseudo-hallmark which happens to imitate the Jezler hallmark? ::::

Thank you so much for the information and thank you for the help with the images!!! I am learning how to use the site and will improve the quality of my output on the image side.

This is fascinating! In what period were pseudo hallmarks used?

For Hanau pseudo marks see here:

The idea was to reproduce old silver (e.g. Renaissance) because historic styles were popular in interior decoration in late 19th century.

Hi
let me show you different Jezler marks.
First, a mark from the late 1800, about 1880:

This mark is about the same age, 1880 to 1900:

Then here a nice small mark from around 1900 to 1920 in Art Nouveau style:

And here an early example of the mark how it is still used. This one is from the 1920ies:

As you can see, in early marks the shield has straight sides, and usually the fineness is marked next to it. Later and current marks have a shield with curved sides. Also, in newer marks the fineness mark is separate from the shield.

The Jezler mark on your spoon has a shield with straight sides, indicating an older mark, say 1880 to 1900. This fits well with the historism period where replicas of such Apostle spoon were in high demand. I think next to your Jezler mark was the fineness mark, 750 or 800. The two identical stamps which are there now were probably added to cover the finess mark. I do not know if this was done already at the time of manufacturing or later. At least it appears the "modern" mark was not wanted.

Nice spoons from the late 1800.
