Small Octagonal Box on Chain W.G. CO.

This was my grandmother's. We're of Swedish heritage and have found other pieces from Sweden, so I'm beginning my search for the maker and the function of this finely crafted little silver box. As you can see, it's lined with purple velvet, and a bit deep for a locket, and the chain with the ring one the eld is quite short. The only mark if "W.C. CO." on the ring attached to the box. If this turns out to be something other than Swedish, I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer as to where to try next. Thank you...
