Please help identify the hallmarks on this coffee pot

When 'great aunt Therèse' gave a christening present to Jeanne at Mons in August 1884, she referred to it as 'my silver coffee pot'.


There are two marks on the lid:


One is a hand holding a rope with a letter E above the thumb


The other is a numeral 2 framed by crossed palm fronds.


And there are two marks on the bottom of the pot. One is the same hand and rope as on the lid, the other is a letter D with something like a mouse above it.

Can't help you very much, but I believe we are looking at some Belgium marks here from the first half of the 19th century.

Thank you. That gives me the clue to find this information:

The hallmarks are Belgian, from the Dutch Occupation, 1814-31.

The hand holding a stick with a letter E, all in a circle, is the city mark of Mons, on both lid and body.

The numeral 2 framed between crossed laurel branches, in a square, is the assay mark indicating 833/1000 purity of silver, on both lid and body.

The square with a mouse above a D is a maker's mark, on the body only.

Delheid Freres of Brussels Belgium used a mark with something like a snake over a D. Started producing silver items after 1925. You might check into them to see if they ever used your mark.

Hello, the Delheid mark was registered in 1862, so this is a different maker here. Van Wittenberghe does not document the mark on this piece in his Bruxelles catalogue (number 4 on Your list) as he centers on Bruxelles, and Tardy (number 1 on the list) has no makers marks. Best wishes, Bahner

Ok Good guess.
Nice to see that you are all reading my articles on Belgian silver.

Here we are speaking of a silversmith D for the City of Mons!!!
Not for Brussels ( Delheid was Silversmith in Brussels Not in Mons.)
Just to know more - One of the first silversmith Delheid in Brussels, had a makers'mark in the years 1814-31 , it was a D above a sword in a square form -mark. (n°1791 in the Stuyck)

Unfortunately The Stuyck - Belgische zilvermerken - does not give any clue as for this Silversmith with letter D , working in the city of Mons.
But if you are nice ....

I'll ask the specialist in Belgium, who is making researchwork on the subject. and I'll see if she has the answer.
