Silverplate?

Hello everybody,
I have been asked by my mother-in-law to find out more about a spoon (a stuffing spoon I believe).
Looking on your web-site I think it might be silverplate and maybe from Sheffield (because of the crown).
Any help would be highly appreciated, I will now try to embed some pictures.

Hi Carlo,

Welcome to the Forum.

I cannot help much, but the mark appears to be 'H & C crown A', it's not a mark I recognise. The 'H & C' may possibly be a retailer, it was not uncommon for manufacturers to mark items with a retailer's or wholesaler's name, at the expense of their own, if the order placed was large enough.

The use of a crown mark on plated wares was outlawed in the mid-1890's, so your spoon pre-dates that.

The 'A' is a quality indicator, but as there was no industry standards at this date, it's really quite meaningless.

The pattern is 'Lily', it was produced by several manufacturers.

Hopefully another member will have some thoughts on the identity of 'H & C'.

I am really intrigued now, I hope somebody else can add up to your findings. Meanwhile I will try to find out more about the spoon from my mother-in-law.

Just a small addition, the Lily pattern was introduced by Elkington & Co. in 1850, thus this spoon can be dated to between 1850 and 1896.

Hello everybody,
Thanks again for the info, unfortunately all my in-law knows is that it used to belong to her mother-in-law and that she was from Kent, so not much help there.
