Help with identifying mark & items origin

Postby ErikNL » Sun Jun 07, 2020 8:01 am

Good day,

Some 25 years ago I acquired a boxed set of silver plated (?) cutlery. I have never really used the cutlery. I recently stumbled upon the box and examined the pieces for their marks. From what I have learned so far through this forum, it is probably made by William Hutton and Sons of Birmingham / Sheffield. I am looking for help to further identifying the origins and make of the cutlery and box. I am curious about its use.

(admin edit - see Posting Requirements )

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Regards,

Erik

Hi,
You are right about the maker;they were very famous and it is easy to search for for the details and their history.
BM stands for Britannia Metal (plated).
No appraisals here; the box is nice and well made, but several spoons are missing.

Hi Erik,

Welcome to the Forum.

A break-down of the marks:

WH & S - William Hutton & Sons

BP - 'British Plate', a patriotic re-branding of 'German Silver'. This refers to the alloy from which the flatware is made of.

MP - Magneto Plate, the system using a magneto-electric dynamo instead of batteries for electro-plating.

A - The standard (thickness) of silver applied.
