Help w/M mark on Silver Holder for Lenox China

Postby CranberryManor » Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:57 am

Hi All - I am new to this forum but was hoping to get some help identifying the maker of this sterling holder for a Lenox demitasse/espresso cup (I did a complete search of the web site and of the board, and had no luck):

the mark is of an M with a hammer-like leg and a "swish" through it. I believe the number reads 58.

thanks for any help - I hope to one day be able to answer the questions instead of just ask.

That could be the mark used by the Matthews Company, Newark, New Jersey. Incorporated in 1907. Around 1936 they merged with Eleder-Hickok to form the Hickok-Matthews Company. I believe Hickok-Matthews continued to use this mark.

Thank you both - that is the mark. I saw the Matthews mark on the encyclopedia, but didn't make the connection that is was a sword - must be my eyes. Thank you again for the help!
