Question about a certain marking and about Mexican candleabras

Postby orion7884 » Sun May 17, 2020 6:56 pm

First off what does this marking mean that is in the photo I provided?

Second I have 2 candleabras. Inside a certain part on them it simply says sterling. No markings. I read that if a piece says just sterling and doesn't list a certain number telling the silver content then its sterling silver and is 92.5% silver aka .925. Is this true? I mean I have never seen a piece that said sterling and wasn't real silver. I wouldn't think it would say sterling if it was a plated item. They would just put a plated hallmark if this were the case I would think. Rather then put sterling and no marking or any other marking. So I'm guessing that what I read is true and if it just says sterling it is 92.5 or .925 sterling silver. Because if it weren't how could anyone be able to tell what it was without an acid test. There would be no way to tell if it were plated or whatever else. The only thing that makes sense is sterling being. 925 silver and if the silver content was different than it would say for instance sterling and the silver content number would be next to it. For example sterling .800 reason why a piece that doesn't have content number next to sterling is because it was. 925. If the piece was anything other than. 925 it would be listed.

Anyway lmk if this is correct please

Hi,
As a general question; sterling is .925 millesimal fineness (92.5% silver in the alloy).
Sterling .800 is nonsense, probably based on wrong usage of words sterling and solid silver as synonyms.
Silver plated items should be marked accordingly but one never knows;there are fakes.
Show us the candelabra and the marks, as suggested by Peter.
Regards
