Need help identifying mark on fork

Postby maxfield p » Thu Nov 09, 2006 7:19 pm

This small, 6-inch-long fork is marked STERLING and has a patent date of 1877. There's a maker's mark that I haven't been able to identify yet. Can anyone identify it for me? thanks!

Hello, according to Hagan (1994) this is the "Amaryllis" pattern by Shiebler. Both Hagan and Rainwater mention makers Polhemus, Coles & Wood, whose patterns were aquired by Shiebler. Rainwater lists a very similar mark under Shiebler. On this piece here the mark seems incomplete. Am I seeing things or does this mark include the letters J (for John Polhemus ?) C (for Coles ?) and W (for Wood ?). Best wishes, Bahner

Excellent work Bahner, that is a Shiebler mark.
I believe that is a G and W on a large S which stands for George W. Shiebler.
