Can't help you with the maker's mark. I don't find it in my American books.

Spaulding & Company was a manufacturer and retailer. They imported items from at least France and Great Britian. They even have their own registered London hallmark. Had some king of relationship with Gorham.
Located in Chicago, Illinois, they were founded in 1855 as S. Hoard & Company. In 1888 they incorporated under the name of Spaulding & Company. In business at least into the 1970's. The attached scan is an advertisement from the late 19th century.

The maker's mark is for Wm. Durgin & Co. The firm was acquired by Gorham ca.1905 but the Durgin marks continued to be used until around 1930.
