Country of Orgin and Date Help on Flatware

Hello. I hope I am in the right section. I am looking for information on the marks on this antique silver utensil. I have a very large set of flatware that has been in my family and I am trying to determine where this comes from, or any information. It says " J&H.C. Walter" and then it has marks that look like date marks, assay marks etc., but what I see online says it is not British, but I also can't find anything that is an H in a circle. I searched the database for "Walter" "J&H" and combinations to see if I can at least find the maker, but no luck. The utensil is also inscribed with a family name, so I assume that it is from sometime in 1800s. Thank you for any information!

The retailers were Jacob and Horace C Walter who were born in Montgomery and Otsego New York in 1788 and 1828 respectively.

There is flatware by this maker marked ‚‚coin‚‚ or ‚‚sterling‚‚
So, in this case it is solid silver without the standard being specifically indicated ?

Apparently the star mark is not part of the maker mark, so would this not be an accepted symbol for approximate coin quality short of sterling standard?

Should not affect the dating of this piece, but, my Rainwater (3rd ed.) indicates A.B. Schreuder continued to work alone after 1871 but still using the H.&S. mark. Company sold c.1895-6.

Thank you for all of this information. I am impressed that you all found out so much information. I wasn't getting anywhere with the H&S I thought they were some type of mark other than the brand and didn't even realize that a retailer would put their name on silverware. Learning so much. I appreciate it!
