Silver spoon from Danzig

Postby Hose_dk » Wed Oct 04, 2006 4:31 am

I have a silverspoon from Danzig. I contains 3 marks.
1. the city mark with the two crosses
2. S
3. the silver smith MEYER

Unfortunately I have not yet been able to include a picture. I hope that somebody can give me an idea of when my MEYER was active. And whatever information you can give.

Hello, the 'S' is probably the warden's letter. It appears several times, so without a pic there is a little guesswork involved. It was e.g. in use around 1800. There are two Meyers active around 1800, Carl Ludwig M. and his son Johann Ludwig. Their marks are almost identical. There are two more Meyers in Gdansk, active around 1860/1880. But there seem to be no more warden's marks documented for that period, so it might be one of the earlier Meyers. Best wishes, Bahner

Thank you very much I am sure that my spoon is around 1800 It contains owners initials on the front of the spoon - and a later owners initials on the backside. The one at the back is dated 1882. They probaly belongs to the second owner.

And OK now I know how to include pictures. That was not difficult.
