German reticulated basket

I measured the specific gravity of this, while it was out I figured I would see if anyone can tell me any more about it. At first I thought it was unmarked but I finally found what I believe to be a tiny German mark on it, though no maker is included nor could I find the maker anywhere else on it. BTW, this tested at specific gravity 10.0, which is about right for 800 silver.

Would this have been used as is, or would it have been a liner for a ceramic piece?

It`s clearly marked with German crescent moon and crown mark and 800.
