Maker identification

Postby lighthouseman » Sun Oct 01, 2006 2:35 pm

Hello.

My father found this item on a beach in Dublin. I thinks it's a medal awarded for sporting achievment in schools. I need help identifying the maker and the date letter. From what I can see it appears to be a Chester hallmark dated (B) 1902. I'm not sure if the maker is J&RG or J&RC. I'm told 9 .375 equates to 9 carat gold.

A friend of mine has suggested the date letter might be an S (1856). He believes the clipped edges of the date letter box are significant in this regard.

Sorry, don't know the maker's mark, but I believe the 1902 date is correct. It is a better fit based on style and it would most probably (but not necessarily) have a queen's head duty mark were it pre-1890.
Regards, Tom
