Is this a magic wand from Austria?

Postby Joerg » Wed Feb 28, 2018 4:41 pm

Hi
I inherited this strange item, looking like a magic wand. It came in the fitting box, the wand is wood, painted black and the fittings are metal - German Silver. No markings. There is an inscription reading: "I. Jäner 1894" and initials. This is Austrian German for 1st January 1894. The tip is missing, but from the etui it cannot be long. According to relatives it was always together with a tophat. The lenght is 32 cm, the etui allows for the missing tip a lenght of 3 cm.
I think it is a joke article, a magic wand for a new year celebration in 1894.
What do you think?

Hi Jörg,

An orchestra conductor's baton perhaps? I believe older examples were much thicker than their modern counterparts.

Hi Trev
I googled pictures following your suggestion and you are right. This is 100% in line with victorian orchestra conductor's batons. This is it.
Thank you very much, mystery solved.
Kind regards, Jörg
