Hi David,

Image
The silver-plated seal perhaps originated as a silver- plated teaspoon or letter opener.

For information about Dutch mobilization September 1939 see:

Your seal does it have an inscription/monogram or is it just a base?

I have a strainer of the same design and same marks.

Reading the marks from top to bottom, they are 'P' 'L' 'EE' 'T'.

I'll try and add some images of the piece over the weekend.

Your welcome, yes silver plate marks not hallmarks and made just after the mobilization in 1939. Made by an unknown factory or perhaps made by the Gero factory;

Hi Trev, the Dutch word pleet means plated with a thin layer of precious metal.

Hi David & Trev,

Image

Above is what we call in Dutch a sigaretten dovertje or cigarette butt extinguisher. Mobilization theme from tea strainers, teaspoons, letter openers to cigarette butt extinguishers.

Hi Peter,

Thank you. As the strainer is quite shallow, do you think there is any possibility that this is in fact an absinthe spoon?

Hi Trev,

No for sure it's a tea strainer missing its under plate/coaster. Absinthe was banned in the Netherlands in 1909 because it would lead to insanity. In 2004 the ban was lifted.

Best,

Peter
